Host Protection Plans

Turo embarked on a major overhaul of host-facing insurance plans to help hosts earn more money and reduce jargon. The project created more flexibility for hosts to chose which cars they wanted to be better-protected.

The new Host Protection Plans was a key contributor to 2020 cost improvements and allowed risk-tolerant hosts to earn even more money with a higher-deductible (something they asked for). The UX designs and backend-focused engineering also established the first-ever comparison tool that allowed hosts to compare their existing plan metrics against a new selection. Lastly, the project integrated jargon-free education during plan-picking, to help hosts better understand Turo’s insurance language and plan benefits. It was a win for Turo’s bottom line and a win for hosts who wanted more money.

50% of hosts and 65% of Power Hosts migrated to the new plans within 30 days. The remainder of inactive hosts were automatically migrated on day 31 to a corresponding plan based on their existing deductible.

Additional outcomes included:

  • More plans to select (from 2 to 5 plans in some countries)

  • Batch-apply the same plan across all vehicles, reducing effort for hosts with large fleets

  • Global rollout of similar plans for Canada and UK, based on a successful USA rollout

  • Backend-driven refactoring that allowed future plan changes with ease

  • Memorable plan names based on percentage of host earnings (from “Premier” to “Plan 80”)

  • Improved value of UX research to drive future product roadmap
